The most expensive hobbies in the world

Work… Home… Home… Work…
An advertising break for a visit to the hairdresser, a movie with friends, or bowling. Familiar?

Oh, and there are also pleasant moments when, in a rush to work, you forget to turn off the kettle or turn off the water, downing a cup of aromatic coffee in one gulp.

Even before you’ve started working, your thoughts are already at home in the evening, sitting and waiting for the plumber, while those lucky enough will meet the “man for an hour” with bread and salt. This service is in trend now. As they say, the sheep are intact and the wolves are fed. That is, the wife is blooming like a May rose… and the husband, a real champ, has managed to take care of the household.

After working a day (the Przewalski’s horse would be envious) and trotting lightly home… There, the family awaits and the most cherished hobbies – washing, ironing, cleaning, cooking. And the most prestigious of these hobbies is undoubtedly “chewing the granite of science,” when you do homework with the kids.

But if we step away from sarcasm and irony, everyone needs a break, an outlet, free time, “open cash register,” I took off my high heels, loosened my tie and belt…

And if this starts not only to take time and money but also to bring spiritual and material pleasure, then… no comments, friends!

And it doesn’t matter at all what your skin color, hair texture, religion, beliefs, gender, or faith is. It doesn’t matter if you’re a man or a woman, a teenager or someone with silver at the temples. The essence is to step away from the daily routine for a while.

It’s no secret that each of us has our own outlet. Some are avid collectors, dancers, singers, while others are drawn to mechanisms, organisms, technology… But, in most cases, just a desire is not enough. Because there are hobbies that, just hearing the investment amount required, will make your head spin.

Let’s discuss everything in order. We’ll cast our lines into the river of various hobbies and interests. We’ll monitor their depth, width, and bottom. As they say, we’ll polish all the facets of the diamond. And then, perhaps, some of you will radically reconsider your attitude towards mental relaxation. You’ll do everything possible and impossible to earn money to fulfill your cherished dream.

Ballroom Dancing

If you’re inspired by Natasha Rostova and Lieutenant Rzhevsky, Vlad Yama, Anastasia Muravyeva, Louis van Amstel, or if your idol is Tony Irving, Veronika Meshko, and many other famous dancers, then welcome. If your dream is to communicate through the language of the body, enjoying music and spectacular costumes, then you’ve knocked on the right door.

But, as is often the case in life, there are a number of treacherous “BUTs.” This hobby is not cheap, as lessons, costumes, travel, and accommodation during competitions will cost you. Prepare to spend… are you ready? Around 10,000 dollars a year, or even more. Also, important factors include your body and its parameters. Add a large handful of iron patience, a couple of spoonfuls of endurance, and a lot of free time, and you’ll achieve outstanding results. In general, an impressive hobby, but definitely not cheap!

Aviation and Flying

And I want to fly…. Probably, each of us has dreamed of soaring like a bird, touching the gentle blonde clouds. Rising into the heavenly ocean, cutting through the dense heights with wings, or diving and falling like a stone. Flying has been, is, and will be one of the most expensive hobbies.

Judge for yourself, you will spend over 5,000 dollars for a pilot’s license (after studying diligently at a flight school). Next, renting an aircraft will cost you 80 dollars per hour of flight. But if you’re a “chronic flyer,” you’ll need your own plane. To sum up, prepare more than 100,000 fluttering American bills for buying and maintaining your bird. Food for thought, enjoy!

Scuba Diving

If you can’t imagine your life without the azure sea coast, alluring and dangerous depths, coral reefs, and exotic underwater inhabitants, then your hobby is called scuba diving.

What is it and what’s it all about? SCUBA — Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus, which translates to “self-contained underwater breathing apparatus,” simply put, a scuba tank. Divers are called scuba divers. There are also freedivers, who dive without a tank, holding their breath while diving.

I warn you right away, one or two “extreme swims” won’t cut it, as the activity must be regular and your health must be excellent. As for the cost, the most basic equipment will cost around 500 dollars. Want to stand out and show off? Then add a similar amount. A certificate is indispensable, which costs approximately 300-400 USD. Trips, flights, accommodation, and meals add up to 3,000-4,000 dollars (this is an approximate amount for a trip to the Great Barrier Reef).

Additional expenses should be considered for deeper dives, as both the cost of the certificate and equipment will consume quite a few appetizing Franklins!

Skydiving

Or, to put it in layman’s terms – parachuting. And again, the sky… again, the clouds… again, the indescribable sensations associated with gravity. Yes, with gravity, as first you will ascend a couple of kilometers in a plane, and then return to mother earth in free fall.

For everything to go smoothly, with the parachute opening properly and the cords cut correctly, you’ll have to part with 250-300 dollars per jump. Approximately 1,500 USD for 7-10 extreme doses of pleasure. If you consider the cost of the thrill lasting 1-3 minutes, then for a week it’s 2,000, and for a year – 24,000 bucks!

Not scared? Ready to spend your hard-earned money? Then let’s go further. After learning the basics of the sport, you will naturally want more. Various tricks, figures, and formations in the air, solo or with others, will hit your wallet even harder. And… don’t forget to add medical insurance, as any sport involves risk.

Drag Racing

If you are crazy about the smell of burning rubber, and the word “speed” hits your temples with adrenaline. If you love the “Christmas Tree,” but not the festive one that came to us… then consider drag racing.

This is a competition for acceleration on a straight track, which involves a sprint race over a distance of 402 meters. Sometimes races are held over ½ – ⅛ mile or a measured mile. To participate, you will need from 200,000 to a million dollars or more. Changed your mind? This amount includes the purchase of used cars, repairs, fuel (a mixture of methanol and intro-methane to achieve speed nirvana at 300 mph). There are also a number of rules, the violation of which leads to the red lights on the Christmas Tree traffic light. The one whose car crosses the finish line first gets the coveted trophy, a storm of applause, and a lot of positive vibes. Good luck!

Drifting

Do you love speed, extremes, engine roars, and the music that comes from the screeching of tires on asphalt or ice? Do you dream of mastering the technique of taking turns using controlled skidding at the highest possible speeds and angles of trajectory? Do you want to participate in a sport like drifting? No problem, save up 60,000 USD and head towards bright and thrilling impressions. In reality, this hobby will indeed cost you a pretty penny. Cars, their components, tuning, racing suits, and more will require significant investments. But, what won’t you do to get closer to your cherished desires?

Drifting is usually done with popular Japanese cars such as Mazda RX 7, Toyota Corolla (AE86), Nissan Silvia, Nissan Skyline, Nissan Fairlady Z (Z33-34), Toyota Chaser, Toyota Mark II, or BMW 3 Series. American cars like Chevrolet Corvette, Dodge Viper, and Ford Mustang also make an appearance. Engaging in this hobby, you’ll not only thrill your nerves but also showcase your mechanical skills. For example, in Russia, Arkady Tsaregradtsev converted his all-wheel-drive Nissan Skyline GT-R R32 into a rear-wheel-drive car.

Keiichi Tsuchiya, Masato Kawabata, Arkady Tsaregradtsev, Georgy Chivchyan – these are the unmatched “kings of drifting.” Want to be like them? Then take up drifting training, stock up on patience, endurance, and attention… and, of course, shake your piggy bank!

Thrilling Drive (Circuit Racing)

As known, even in ancient Rome, chariot racing was a popular event. His Majesty – Progress did not stand still but advanced by leaps and bounds. It first introduced bicycles, then motorcycles, followed by trucks, and (for dessert) it left us with race cars.

The term “circuit racing” refers to various types of motorcycle and car racing competitions. The races usually take place on racetracks with solid, smooth surfaces. Why “circuit”? It’s quite simple because the track is in the shape of a circle, and participants enjoy a dose of excitement as they race along a closed trajectory. Unlike rally, rally-raid, or drag racing where vehicles move between specified points, circuit racing features a closed circuit.

You might have heard of circuit racing events such as “Formula 1 Grand Prix,” “FIA GT1,” “FIA GT2,” and “FIA European Truck Racing Championship.” To become a participant and, most importantly, a trophy holder, you need to prepare for hard work. This hobby is very engaging and thrilling. However, it is also dangerous and requires attention, quick reactions, excellent driving skills, and significant financial investment. Costs for driving lessons (if you don’t already know how), purchasing and tuning a vehicle, fuel, and driver gear can amount to tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars.

If you are not deterred by the side effects of the circuit racing fever and eagerly embrace the excitement, risk, speed, and adrenaline, then enjoy!

Car Collecting or “Oldies Rule”

This hobby is notoriously expensive and incredibly absorbing. Remember how you collected toy cars as a child, proudly showing off your latest and greatest model? Well, not much has changed, except that the toys have grown in size and, oh, how they drain your wallet! For example, a stunning Bugatti Type 57S from 1937 costs $4.4 million, while a beautiful Ferrari California from 1961 costs $10.8 million.

People typically collect various types of cars, including luxury cars, sedans, SUVs, trucks, 4x4s, racing and sports cars, and convertibles. Each four-wheeled gem has its own style and distinctive shine, with its price being the crowning glory! Car collecting will cost a lot of money, but the return will be worth it.

A Date with Beauty (Art)

Ladies and gentlemen, let’s reach the pinnacle of expensive hobbies. Yes, indeed… His Majesty Art. Let me present – the unmatched sisters-queens – Painting and Sculpture.

Engaging in art is breathtakingly expensive. For instance, Roy Lichtenstein’s “Nurse” painting is priced the same as the most expensive and tallest (425 m) penthouse on Park Avenue in New York. You could easily buy 1270 new one-bedroom apartments in Butovo with that money. How about that? Don’t panic, though… holding back emotions here is, to put it mildly, difficult. If you are eager to assemble the most exquisite collection, get ready to spend a million dollars… to start with, and then add a bit more. But putting jokes aside, this is a serious and costly activity that will start bringing in returns over time. Are you ready to open your soul and wallet? Then go for it!

Precise, Accurate, and with Style (Golf)

Let’s delve into the historical roots of golf. Ready? Then take a comfortable seat, and let’s begin.

According to some historical experts, this sport fell out of favor in Scotland. King James II issued a ban on golf in 1457 as it distracted archers from learning the art of shooting at a target. The golf mecca is now considered to be the Old Course at St Andrews.

Another theory links golf to a game called pagonica, where a curved stick was used to hit a ball, which was stuffed with feathers.

A third theory suggests that golf originated from the Chinese game of cuju (Chinese: 捶丸 – “to push the ball”), which was popular from the 9th to 14th centuries. The “Autumn Banquet” scroll from the Ming dynasty, dating back to 1368, shows high-ranking officials playing with what appear to be golf-like sticks and trying to hit a tiny ball into holes.

A fourth theory proposes that the early game similar to modern golf was called cambuca, which was played in the Netherlands, Germany, and England.

Like any other sport, “hitting the ball into the hole” has its own set of rules and etiquette. For example, in Kharkiv, a 45-minute session of joy costs 100 UAH.

The capital of Ukraine is famous for its Golf Academy for adults, where lessons in golf etiquette are taught, and equipment is rented. A single lesson costs 290 UAH, while eight lessons cost 1500 UAH. For individual lessons, you will pay 1400 UAH for four sessions during weekdays or 1800 UAH for weekends and holidays. For children, the cost is 140 UAH per lesson or 800 UAH for eight lessons, with advanced students paying more, up to 1300 UAH.

So, what does this game entail? Each player typically has to go through eighteen holes in a specific order. A hole is an opening in the ground, and the course consists of various zones, including the starting area, the fairway, and the green with a hole in the center. Players must navigate water hazards, sand traps, bushes, trees, and tall grass while adhering to the etiquette and honesty of the game. As for equipment, golf sets start at around $25 and can go up to $60. A Cobra XL Speed golf club set costs $1155, but the right club is essential for a successful game. Golf balls vary in quality and material, with a pack of three ranging from $1 to $20. Leather golf bags cost around $460, and golf umbrellas start at $20 and up. Accessories like ball holders and wristwatches average $250. For clothing and shoes, expect to spend from $600.

In summary, if you are committed to following the rules and etiquette, and are willing to invest in lessons, equipment, and proper attire, golf offers a range of positive aspects. It has no age limits, delights the soul and benefits the body, fosters new connections, unites families, and maintains equality among players. Membership in a golf club is valued worldwide and throughout the year. The best part is, the longer you play, the cheaper it becomes! Fresh air, pleasant conversations, health benefits, and etiquette – what could be better?

The Path to Trophies (Equestrian Sports)

Prepare to experience your most adorable and benevolent emotions. Oh, and a note… this pertains to those who are not afraid of animals. Sadly, this is not the case for everyone. But now, let’s move on. If you have a soft spot for observing noble horses, can endure rigorous training, and are generally resilient, attentive, goal-oriented, and have a bit of cash, then you are our ideal candidate!

Equestrian sports include:

  • Dressage,
  • Show jumping,
  • Three-day eventing,
  • Reining (a type of western sport),
  • Driving,
  • Endurance riding,
  • Vaulting.

The official FEI classification does not include ladies’ riding, trick riding, polo, and racing. Contrary to popular belief, horse racing is not considered equestrian sport; it’s more like a test drive for horses.

Horses boast a variety of tack and equipment: bridles, bits, hackamores, saddles, boots, saddle blankets, sheets, halters, lead ropes, and more. A fashion-conscious person might envy this selection. You won’t be left behind either, with your own collection of breeches, spurs, tailcoats, gloves, whips, and helmets costing a sum with three or four zeros.

Regarding costs for this esteemed hobby, riding lessons can be about 400 UAH for 45 minutes on weekends and 500 UAH on holidays. An individual monthly subscription (four lessons) costs 1400 UAH for weekdays or 1800 UAH for weekends and holidays.

Another price factor comes into play if you’re interested in purchasing your own horse or even a whole farm. The amount will depend on the horse breed, maintenance, tack, stabling, and other factors. In some cases, the price of a horse can equal that of a car or house. This passion, undoubtedly, will not only drain your pockets but can also bring breathtaking rewards. A significant highlight will be having trophies, medals, and awards displayed proudly on your Wall of Honor.

If you’re filled with a thirst for victory, agility, health, and patience, and your bank account is yearning for action… Congratulations! You’ve cracked the code to “happiness”. Interested in experiencing the thrill, taste of victory, hoofbeats, and horsepower beneath you? Then the answer is clear – dive into equestrian sports!

Sailing (Yachting)

Let’s take a moment to close our eyes and imagine the sounds of the water, the gentle breeze, the kisses of the salty wind, and the caress of the sun’s rays…. The music arising from the conductor’s waves, the speed of the wind, and the crashing waves cannot leave anyone indifferent. We’re talking about “sports with a breeze”.

Are you a fan of active leisure and cannot imagine your life without competitions? You’re not afraid of the hot sun, gusty winds, storms, rocking, and other delights of the water element? Then, you’ve pulled a lucky ticket in the exam, congratulations! Compared to other hobbies, sailing has a relatively affordable pricing policy. For example, in Kiev, the Marinero school charges 8900 UAH for fourteen classes. However, this is not an obstacle to receiving a dose of pure pleasure, outdoor recreation, and the opportunity to ride the wave of positivity!

Logically, this hobby makes sense in those territories where Mother Nature has granted her blessings.

Historically, the birthplace of yachting is the Netherlands, and its origins trace back to the 16th century. The term “jaght” (derived, apparently, from “jagen” – to hunt, chase) was first recorded in a Dutch-Latin dictionary of 1599. The prestigious sailing competition is the “America’s Cup”. Here, technologies and major syndicates measure their strengths. The winner sets the standard for yachts in the next Cup cycle. This has spurred scientific, technical, and technological advancements. The America’s Cup has seen many technologies and materials that have been excellently and usefully applied in aerospace and other industries.

This sport, like golf, is included in the Olympic program. The Summer Olympic Games took place in Paris (1900) and remain a part of the sporting world to this day.

Several classes of yachts compete. The highlight is the battle for victory among women, men, and mixed crews across all types of yachts: sailing, motor, gulets, sail-motor catamarans. Regarding venues, it’s quite straightforward – the sea, ocean, lake, river.

The Soviet Union won a noble medal in Olympic sailing in 1960, thanks to the crew of Timir Pinegin and Fyodor Shutkov. The triumph was achieved in the technically challenging Star class.

Let’s touch on the financial aspect. How much might a beautiful yacht cost? For used models, prices range from $3000 to $40000. A new sport cruiser, equipped with amenities (suitable for amateur racing), like the Elan E5 costs from €204900, while the Salina S44 starts at €249000. Prices vary depending on components, engine specifications, and model class. A small boat like the Cap Camarat 5.5 BR Serie 2 costs around $22340.

Interested? Want to follow in the footsteps of Joseph Schomaker, Timir Pinegin, Alexander Chuchelov, Valentin Mankin, or walk the path of Boris Budnikov, Viktor Potapov, Andrey Balashov, Tinu Tyniste, Larisa Moskalenko, Georgy Shayduko, Stefania Yelfutina? No problem, prepare excellent physical fitness, enviable patience, attention, a desire to win, and… some money. Do you have all that in one bottle? You’re a true future champion. Fair winds!
