Berlin achieves an annual result of 130 million euros in the federal state funding programme for the joint project ‘Verbesserung der regionalen Wirtschaftsstruktur’ (GRW)

Investments in Germany, Austria, USA

Last year, Berlin fully utilized its quota of €130 million from the federal-state program “Improving Regional Economic Structure” (GRW). The funds are used to stimulate investments in companies as well as for economic infrastructure purposes.

On one hand, the money will be used to subsidize Berlin companies for investments in new locations and the expansion of existing ones. This will help secure jobs and create new ones. On the other hand, the state is investing in improving the business infrastructure in Berlin. This includes the development of commercial areas, the enhancement of transport links connecting commercial areas, and investments in tourist infrastructure.

Out of the €130 million, nearly €53 million went to support businesses, and over €77 million went to projects improving business-related infrastructure. As a result of these proportional subsidies, the volume of investments in Berlin amounted to approximately €400 million.

Examples of projects include: the construction of the upper-level “Lise Meitner” center in Neukölln, the construction of the Salvador Allende Bridge in Köpenick, the development of the Gleislinse commercial area in Schöneweide, further development of commercial areas in Marzahn, tourist renovation of expanded Mauerpark areas, and several long-distance bike paths such as Spreeradweg, Havel Bike Path, and Dalem Bike Path.

Similarly, investment grants of €130 million for the period 2019-2021 have been allocated to businesses and infrastructure managers. Here, Berlin managed to increase its national allocation to €118 million, accepting unused funds from other federal states, almost by 10% (+ €12 million). These new projects include the construction of a new commercial center on the campus in Buch, the construction of the FUBIC Technology and Startup Center in Dalem, as well as large-scale modernization activities for WISTA technology and incubators in Adlershof.

The volume of business promotion in the coming years is increased to €87 million. The Senate Department for Economic Affairs recommends that companies review their investment planning in the short term to take advantage of higher subsidy rates for the funding period up to 2020.
