The number of Germans claiming to have no idea about the stock market is increasing. This is also related to the response of a significant portion of respondents, namely: “they simply don’t care about business topics.”
German interest in economic and financial issues has significantly decreased. This is evidenced by a representative survey commissioned by the banking association BdB, WELT AM SONNTAG. According to this, in April 2019, 36 percent of respondents stated that they are interested or very interested in the economy. In the previous 2017 survey, this share was 47 percent.
In the current survey, 31% answered the question about their personal economic interests as “little” or “none at all.” The previous maximum value dates back to 2014, when it was 20 percent.
In the current survey, 39 percent of respondents stated that they “have no idea” about the stock market. In 2017, only 27 percent said this. The proportion of women who answered this question in 2019 was only 40 percent higher than among men (38 percent).
